Happy April Fool?s Day, folks!

In the spirit of holiday, we?ve compiled seven excellent tips to help would-be April fools make poor health insurance decisions this year. Here we go:

1. Wait for the 2014 health care reform provisions to kick in before getting coverage! The 2014 provisions of the law are the ones that will require most people to have coverage and prevent insurance companies from denying you coverage based on your medical history.

It may sound tempting to wait for 2014 before you get coverage, but the medical bills for a serious illness or injury could land you in bankruptcy between now and then. Explore your coverage options now before it?s too late. If you have a pre-existing medical condition visit pcip.gov or coverageforall.org to learn about government-sponsored options.

2. Don?t look into all your coverage options! Employer-based coverage is generally best for most people, especially for those with pre-existing medical conditions who may be declined elsewhere. But if your employer plan doesn?t meet your needs or you can?t afford it, take a look at the individual and family health insurance market when your next open enrollment period comes around.

3. Keep adult children on your plan till age 26 no matter what! The 2010 health reform law allows you to keep adult children on your health plan until age 26, which is great news for a chronically-underinsured segment of the population. But if your young adult children live in another state there may be no in-network providers nearby and their coverage could be limited at best, even non-existent. Work with adult children to see if there are any more affordable alternatives in the individual market.

4. Ignore unfamiliar terms like ?coinsurance?! It?s shocking how few people can define or explain basic terms like ?deductible? or ?premium.? What?s even more disturbing is how incredibly few people know what ?coinsurance? means: a mere 25% according to a 2011 Kelton Research survey sponsored by eHealthInsurance*. Coinsurance is another ? and very important ? form of cost-sharing. It means money out of your pocket. If you buy a plan with a 70% coinsurance rate and don?t know what you?re getting, you may be in for a rude awakening.

5. Overlook Short-term health insurance coverage! A lot of people who buy coverage for themselves only need it for a short period of time, or only as a back-up in case of unexpected accidents or illnesses. Rather than limiting themselves to major medical individual policies, some consumers should consider short-term plans. These don?t typically cover things like preventive care or prescription drugs, but they can provide an affordable safety net for medical emergencies for up to six months at a time.

6. Wait till you?re pregnant or sick to look for health insurance! Unfortunately, lots of people wait until it?s too late to get the coverage they need. In most states it?s still possible (until 2014) to be declined coverage due to a pre-existing medical condition. If you?re pregnant or already sick and in need of serious medical care, it?s probably too late to find affordable coverage on your own. Your only options may be employer-based coverage or government assistance. Don?t wait until it?s too late!

7. Never negotiate medical costs! If you have no health insurance or want a kind of treatment not covered by your insurance plan, it?s a good idea to negotiate prices with your medical provider. Without processing your claim through an insurance company you won?t benefit from the lower rates insurers negotiate with medical providers. If you can pay in cash up front or create a payment plan with your provider, you may be able to lower your costs by up to 30%, according to the New York Times**.

Why Google isn't worried about Android revenue ? Mobile ...

Not all investments are made with the expectation that a big payoff is around the corner. Google?s decision to bankroll the development of Android was just such an investment, which makes the past week?s back and forth over just how much money Google has garnered from that investment quite silly.

For some reason, the Guardian (a partial investor in GigaOM, mind you) ran a story last Thursday purporting to have discovered how much revenue Google has earned from Android since its launch in 2008: $550 million. It derived that number from documents filed as part of Google?s legal battle with Oracle over Oracle?s claim that Android infringes patents related to Java, taking Google?s proposed royalty payments to Oracle should it lose the case as a baseline. Google declined to comment on the numbers and Danny Sullivan at Marketing Land quickly challenged the reasoning behind the Guardian?s figures, but he admitted there?s no way to know for sure when Google refuses to provide its own numbers.

The supposedly damning point is that Google?s revenue from Android pales in comparison to its mobile revenue in general, which is on a $2.5 billion annual pace driven mostly by mobile searches on iOS devices and in-app advertising through Google?s?AdMob subsidiary. This, however, should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed the mobile market: over the last several years, iOS users have browsed the Web, downloaded apps, and otherwise engaged with their handsets at a far greater rate than Android users until recently.

The mistake is assuming that Google views this as a big problem, as if Android has been a waste of money because Google makes more money from its competitor. Would Google like to make more revenue from Android? Sure. Money is nice. But Android was a defensive move on Google?s part, and one that wasn?t primarily motivated by desire for revenue or profit.

Back Where It All Begins

Let?s recall 2007, which one day we?ll probably consider a pivotal year in the history of the tech industry. In January, Apple unveiled the iPhone, making it clear (to everyone but Research in Motion, anyway) that the company had come up with a mobile computing concept far beyond anything else on the radar.? In November, Google and its partners unveiled Android and the Open Handset Alliance, pledging to give other handset makers and carriers a modern mobile operating system to compete with the iPhone.

Five years later, Android is the only thing that has prevented Apple from completely taking over the mobile market. ?All Google ever hoped to do was provide a shell-shocked smartphone industry with the tools to build a credible alternative to the iPhone that didn?t come with Apple?s tight-fisted control. The potential upside was that those partners would expand the overall pool of people with access to the mobile Web, therefore ensuring that Google could compete for mobile searches without having to kowtow to Apple.

As Apple CEO Tim Cook reminds everyone as often as he can, we?re still in the infancy of this mobile computing revolution. There are billions of people around the world who have yet to fire up their first smartphone, and over the rest of this decade we can be sure that those people will have at least two choices: iOS and Android.

Without Android, where we would be? It?s quite arguable that Android hurt the rest of the mobile industry more than it hurts Apple (again, see RIM) but its success has ensured that the world will have access to a modern mobile operating system governed by different principles than Apple?s. Sure, Android isn?t quite as ?open? as Google might have once vowed, but for the most part, Android is a freewheeling development platform?for better or worse.

There?s no doubt that Android can frustrate those who want the best experience they can get in mobile computing. While it has gotten a lot better, it still seems like it was designed by robots rather than humans, and its wholesale embrace of wireless carriers ? the favored punching bag of the modern mobile consumer ? puts it in an awkward position among those who might ordinarily be sympathetic to its goals.

But Android represents mobile competition. No other mobile company has been able to provide credible competition to Apple: RIM is on the rocks, HP has given up on WebOS, and Microsoft and Nokia remain an afterthought among consumers despite having built decent products. Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, having spent most of his pre-Google career prior chafing under the thumb of a computer industry dominated by a single company, realized long ago that Google was in a position to make sure that didn?t happen again.

No Owners, Only Spenders

Even if Google did generate more mobile revenue from Android than it did the iPhone, Google?s mobile revenue ($2.5 billion) is a very small part of its overall financial picture ($38 billion in total revenue during 2011). And while it seems like very old news, Android has really only been a mobile phenomenon since late 2010 and into 2011. Google can afford to take the long view on Android revenue given its overall financial picture and (as mentioned above) the fact that mobile growth has a long way to go.

This isn?t like Microsoft pouring money down the Bing drain in a fruitless attempt to dent Google?s search dominance: Android is actually the world?s leading mobile operating system, and the market itself is growing strongly. And even if Google derives most of its mobile revenue from iOS, it would be hard for Apple to drop Google: Google?s share of mobile searches is even greater than its share of desktop Web searches and when Apple started making noise about barring AdMob from the iPhone, the federal government raised an eyebrow. Meanwhile, Android Web usage is growing.

Google has a lot of things to worry about in 2012, but when it looks at its finances, its Android strategy isn?t one of them.

Strange gamma-ray objects perplex scientists

The universe is filled with high-energy radiation, much of which is made of gamma rays belched out by strange pulsing stars and the remnants of supernova explosions. But a new study of some of most extreme objects has turned up a mystery: nearly one-third of all gamma-ray emitting objects seen to date defy identification.

The objects were spotted by NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, which scans the entire sky over the course of three hours, mapping the powerful spectrum. When stacked together, the surveys create an extremely precise view of the gamma-ray universe.

Scientists then match these images to other observations to identify each source. But the identities of some gamma-ray sources in space still continue to elude the astronomers.

"There's some that, despite all our efforts, we really do not know what they are," David Thompson, Fermi's deputy project scientist, told SPACE.com.? "They do not seem to be any of the usual suspects." [ Video: Mystery of Fermi's Gamma-Ray Objects ]

The cosmic detective
The Fermi space telescope has spotted nearly 500 powerful gamma-ray sources in deep space over the last three years. Before its launch in 2008, scientists only knew of four such objects.

"We're not looking for the ordinary things," Thompson said. "We're looking for the extraordinary; powerful things that might produce gamma rays."

Of the newly discovered bodies, more than half are active galaxies. Pulsars and supernova remnants each make up about 5 percent of the sources, with high-mass binary stars and other galaxies contributing just a smidge more, the researchers said.

Yet a large collection of objects remains unidentified, they added.

In some cases, the readings themselves helped scientists to classify the sources. By looking for changes in energy levels or studying the objects' shapes, astronomers could identify pulsars and galaxies.

But gamma-ray targets without these distinctions remain a mystery. In many cases, the problem may simply be one of not enough data.

"Deeper observations at other wavelengths could find counterparts to some Fermi sources in the future," Pascal Fortin, at the Ecole Polytechnique's Laboratoire Leprince-Ringuet in France, told SPACE.com in an email. Fortin was one of the leaders of the international team that produced Fermi's hard-source list.

A tantalizing mystery
Despite their mysterious origins, the sheer number of unidentified sources is promising.

"The fact that there are so many of these suggests to us ? maybe this is wishful thinking ? that there may indeed be something new out there," Thompson said. "What we'd really like to find is something new and exotic."

One potential cause of the baffling readings could be black holes that are interacting in a new and unexpected way, he added.

If the strange objects reveal nothing else, they highlight how much of space is still a mystery.

"We still have a lot to learn about high-energy processes in the universe," Fortin said.

Over its decade-long mission, Fermi will continue to gather information about the gamma-ray emitters, and may help answer some of the questions it is creating.

"It's an exciting field to work in," Thompson said. "The fact that we have so many of these, I think is very promising in terms of future discoveries."
