CALL ME

U.S. judo coach Jimmy Pedro brought two backup phones to the London Olympics.

And when Kayla Harrison delivered the first Olympic gold medal in USA Judo's history, all of Pedro's phones went bonkers with calls and texts from well-wishers.

Pedro was holding an iPhone ? which had a steady stream of texts rolling up the screen, so many that Pedro simply couldn't keep up reading them.

"Everybody and anybody in American judo that has ever touched my life, Kayla's life or my father's life," Pedro said, when asked who's been calling. "They've been waiting for this moment their entire lives."

10 Reasons to Say Yes to a PPC Campaign

So I have mentioned in the past that SEO is important because you won?t have to use a Pay Per Click for that campaign and that is true. With that being said there are some major advantages to running a Pay Per Click campaign but you must understand what you are doing. Being a Scottsdale web design company we see clients just begin throwing away money because they didn?t take the time to research and understand how to run a successful Pay Per Click Campaign. Let?s take a look at some ways to use Pay Per Click advertising successfully so that hopefully you will be able to begin seeing your return on investment go up and ultimately see your business become successful beyond your imagination.

  1. Keyword Research ? Yes you can use Pay Per Click to do keyword research. Before you begin spending time and money to rank a keyword you can simply use your Pay Per Click campaign to determine what the conversion rate is for that particular keyword. So many people choose to use keywords in their SEO campaign that the users that are searching for the keywords are just wanting information so won?t ever buy anything from your website. Yes you may get a lot of traffic but if that traffic doesn?t equate to sales what good is it. Having a custom Scottsdale web design that sells your products will help but not enough to make a difference when you are targeting the wrong keywords.
  2. Set Your Budget - Unlike many other forms of advertising where it is hard to afford Pay Per Click allows you to be able to set your daily budget. You can easily determine what your daily budget is and never go over it. Your budget can be adjusted at any point to either increase or decrease your budget. If you are having troubles figuring this out ask your Scottsdale web design company and they will be able to assist you.
  3. Levels the Playing Field -You can use your Pay Per Click campaign to begin getting some of the customers for keywords that a fortune 500 company has dominated and there won?t be a chance for you to be ranked for. Just because you don?t have thousands of dollars every day to throw at SEO doesn?t mean you shouldn?t be able to have an ad on the top page of Google for highly competitive keywords.
  4. Branding -A well designed ad for your Pay Per Click campaign will build branding. Even if nobody is clicking on your ad people are seeing it. So they will begin to think of you as a well trusted and respected company when they see your name. This is why it is important to get a custom Scottsdale web design that showcases the quality and trustworthiness of your company.
  5. Track-ability ? Pay Per Click campaigns offer you instant track-ability. You will be able to see how your campaign is doing whether good or bad. This will help you decide if you should up your budget, lower your budget or stop with the campaign all together and begin concentrating on other keywords and maybe different marketing strategies.
  6. Targeted Audience ? With Pay Per Click you will be able to focus on a more targeted audience. Let?s say your company is just focused on selling products to Scottsdale web design companies. Then you are not going to want you ad to reach people in New York with Pay Per Click you can set your settings to be able to narrow in on local businesses. Is this perfect and will you never have out of state clicks no but this will cut down on them big time. Another reason you need to do your research and understand your target audience.
  7. Instant Results -With SEO you? could wait upwards of six months before you begin seeing results but with Pay Per Click you will notice instant results. A well planned Pay Per Click campaign will get you instant results then it will be up to your website to get them to contact you and for you to sell them. This is why having a custom Scottsdale website is so critical. If your website isn?t professional and looks like a high school kid?s project then no matter how much traffic is sent to your website it won?t matter.
  8. Pay Based on Performance ? Have you ever wished that you can only pay somebody based upon how they perform. I mean imagine going to your favorite sporting event and they tell you that you only owe money if the home team wins. This is extremely unlikely but with a Pay Per Click campaign this exactly what you are getting. You only pay Google if somebody clicks on your ad. If nobody clicks on your ad then you are getting free branding exposure.
  9. Easy - If you have time to do the proper research setting up your Pay Per Click campaign is easy to setup on your own. You don?t have to have any web design experience in order to setup your Pay Per Click campaign. now that being said if your don?t do your research you could end up paying for your Pay Per Click campaign and not get any return on investment.
  10. Small Initial Investment ? Most search engines don?t have a minimum budget but some do charge a very small setup fee. After your initial setup fee you are good to begin experimenting and hopefully not only driving traffic to your website but also converting the traffic to sales.

Even though I still believe Search Engine Optimization is the way to go in the long run there are some major benefits of Google?s Pay Per Click that can?t be overlooked. Take the time to do your research and don?t just start a campaign not knowing the first thing about Pay Per Click. Fed says economy may need help, keeps policy on hold

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve stopped short of offering new monetary stimulus on Wednesday even as it signaled more strongly that further bond buying could be in store to help a economic recovery that it said had lost momentum this year.

Fed officials described the economy as having "decelerated somewhat," a change of tone from its previous assessment in June when it said the economy had been "expanding moderately."

The Fed's policymakers also reiterated their disappointment with the slow pace of progress in bringing down the nation's 8.2 percent jobless rate.

The central bank dashed expectations among some investors by taking no new measures, sending U.S. stocks lower and the dollar higher against the euro and the yen.

"They clearly underscored the downside risks to the economy and made it very clear they would be as accommodative as needed," said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial in Newark, New Jersey.

Many economists thought the central bank might extend further into the future its guidance for low rates but the statement maintained its late-2014 language.

The Fed nevertheless showed it was prepared to do more to support an ailing economy.

"The Committee will closely monitor incoming information on economic and financial developments and will provide additional accommodation as needed," the Fed said in its statement.

That was a slight shift from its June statement when the Fed said it was "prepared to take further action as appropriate."

Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker again dissented against the late-2014 timetable.

U.S. economic growth slowed to 1.5 percent in the second quarter as consumer spending faltered, and unemployment remains far too high for the comfort of a central bank that has a dual mandate to keep inflation low and employment high. Job growth slowed sharply in the second quarter to just 75,000 jobs per month from 226,000 in the first quarter.

A report on Wednesday showed U.S. companies added 163,000 jobs in July, more than expected. However, that survey, the ADP National Employment Report, does not carry as much weight as the government's more comprehensive labor market report due on Friday, which includes both public and private sector employment.

Manufacturing data from the Institute for Supply Management pointed to a second month of contraction in the factory sector.

EUROPEAN "FIREWORKS"?

The Fed met a day before a key meeting of the European Central Bank. ECB President Mario Draghi last week ratcheted up speculation of further ECB purchases of Italian and Spanish bonds by saying he would do "whatever it takes" to save the euro.

"The big fireworks will be tomorrow," said Jim Russell, chief equity strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management in Cincinnati. "Anything short of (aggressive ECB action) will represent a disappointment to capital markets."

Europe's crisis is blamed for part of the U.S. slowdown, as fears of another financial crisis keep businesses and consumers on the defensive.

Against that grim backdrop, many think Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke could use his speech at the central bank's high-profile gathering in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in late August to send a strong message to markets. He used that forum in 2010 to communicate the Fed's intention to pursue a second round of quantitative easing, or QE2.

The Fed's next policy-setting meeting is scheduled for September 12-13.

A third installment of QE would probably involve some component of housing debt as the Fed attempts to breathe fresh life into a housing sector that is finally showing some signs of healing.

Other tools Bernanke has signaled are under consideration include lowering the interest the Fed pays banks to park their reserves at the central bank, currently at 0.25 percent, which could induce them to boost lending.

Another option would be to pursue a 'funding for lending' program like the one recently implemented by the Bank of England, whereby the Fed might provide cheap short-term loans to banks in exchange for guarantees that banks will resume lending to individuals and firms.

The latter still requires some study, Bernanke said at his last press conference in June.

Army reinstates medical center head in PTSD probe

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Army has reinstated the head of a West Coast medical center and changed its screening system after an investigation into whether officials reversed soldiers' post-traumatic stress diagnoses to save money, senior leaders announced Tuesday.

The review found that Col. Dallas Homas, commander at Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington state, "did not inappropriately influence PTSD diagnoses" but that the system being used to diagnose soldiers was inappropriate for the military.

Problems with the system at Madigan, which is at Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, came to light when officials reversed some of the soldiers' initial diagnoses of PTSD during additional evaluations. The reversals raised questions about whether the changes were being made to save money.

As a result, Army leaders in May launched a sweeping review of how the service evaluates soldiers for mental health problems at all its facilities. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta later ordered a similar review across all branches of the armed services. Those larger reviews continue.

Part of the focus of the investigation at Madigan was a forensic psychiatric team that had the lead role in screening soldiers being considered for medical retirement and benefits due to PTSD, a condition that results from experiencing or seeing a traumatic event, such as a battlefield casualty or the brutal rigors of war.

"My review found that Col. Homas did not exert any undue influence over PTSD diagnosis, and that he acted appropriately enforcing standard medical guidelines," the Army's vice chief of staff, Gen. Lloyd Austin, said in a statement Tuesday. Suspended as a matter of routine during the probe, Homas is getting his job back immediately.

"What we found is that the forensic methods are not the right ones for the United States Army disability evaluation system," Austin said, noting that new policies and procedures are in place to review PTSD cases. He said that while the forensic screening may be fair, it was "simply not optimal for the unique cases that the Army diagnoses and reviews. We've fixed that."

Earlier this year, Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said that more than 40 percent of the PTSD cases since 2007 that involved candidates for retirement had been overturned. She said that of the 1,680 patients screened at Madigan, more than 690 had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. The psychiatric team there reversed more than 290 of those diagnoses.

According to an official familiar with the review process, 229 service members have been re-evaluated, and of those, 127 have had their PTSD diagnosis reinstated after a review at the facility at Madigan. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the totals have not been made public.

On Tuesday, Murray released a statement saying that the changes at Madigan should provide more accurate diagnoses for the soldiers.

Forensic psychiatry evaluations, which were only being used at Madigan, are more rigid and require additional testing and scrutiny. The Army said Madigan used them to "make the most accurate diagnosis possible." But they also apply certain strict criteria, which does not work well in the military PTSD evaluation.

While the forensic method, which is standard practice for civilians, is legal and provides additional information, the Army determined that a different, clinical approach ? which is being used in the other facilities ? is better for the military.

"I also hope that it encourages more service members to come forward and seek help, knowing they won't be treated unfairly or accused of lying about their symptoms," Murray said. She added that it is important for the Army to try to change the attitude about the mental wounds of war and increase the level of transparency around the disability system.

Homas is a West Point graduate whose career has included deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, where he served as command surgeon. He was appointed in 2011 as commander at Madigan, which serves thousands of soldiers who have been to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Austin on Tuesday said he is confident that Homas "is the leader our medical community needs to implement these new systems and ensure world-class care for our soldiers and their families."

In 2011, an ombudsman investigated complaints from soldiers who said the forensic psychiatric team had reversed earlier diagnoses of PTSD and tagged some of them as possible malingerers.

The ombudsman also wrote a memo about a lecture in which a member of the forensic psychiatric team talked about the need to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars and not rubber stamp PTSD diagnoses that could result in a soldier earning $1.5 million in benefits over a lifetime.

Of the 2.6 million soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines that have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, it's estimated that 13 percent to 20 percent have symptoms of PTSD.

Using Search Engine Optimization Effectively ? Social Media Guide

Every day, many are looking to make some money online. Some of these people even have great ideas but may be in need of an online marketing strategy in order to succeed. By learning about search engine optimization tools and techniques, they can promote their brand wisely.

For a new business to succeed online, they must have an excellent marketing plan in place. This means knowing which internet marketing tools would be the most effective as part of the campaign. Since online promotion is an ongoing process, this is very important.

This requires that the owner do a little bit of homework to navigate the different mediums. Many owners are more than glad to soak in all the information like a sponge. Then there are those who may have their hands full, so they may delegate this to an outsider.

A good balance would be for the owner to learn on their own time while having an assistant handle the day-to-day responsibilities. Over time, both owner and assistant can meet and go over the marketing strategy together. By communicating, the owner can see for themselves how effective their online marketing campaigns are.

When bringing someone on to take over internet marketing duties, they should know the basics such how to use keywords for marketing purposes. These are also called tags and play an important role in search engine optimization, or SEO. If their knowledge is vague, then they will not be able to promote your brand properly by making it visible to traffic.

People who have attempted to learn this on their own may have received incorrect information or not aware of changes that may have taken place. It helps to know the basic guidelines for submitting marketing tools for online use, such as the number of times a keyword may be used. Should a keyword be used frequently in a body of web content, then search engines may disregard this entirely.

There was a time when people would do this as a tactic to drive more traffic to their blog or website. Popular keywords were used repetitively even if they were not relation to the product being sold. In recent, search engines have cut down on this and have established some rules for keyword usage that coincide with basic e-commerce concepts.

This is the reason that everyone with an online business should have someone with internet marketing experience on their side. They can help to create a campaign that will be compatible with the needs of the business owner. By using search engine optimization techniques the right way, people from all walks of life can profit.

Beak Heat: Evolutionary Theory of Bird Bills May Need Revision

News | Evolution

New research on song sparrows offers a new take on bird-beak evolution that is more nuanced than earlier ideas based on finch studies

Image: Greenberg et al/Evolution 2012

A finch's beak evolves according to the size and shape of available seeds. That conventional wisdom is one of the most accepted facts in science?it has been proved again and again in research that began in the Gal?pagos Islands, and stretches from Charles Darwin in the 1830s through to the modern work of evolutionary biologists Peter and Rosemary Grant. Case closed?right?

Not necessarily. Two new studies, led by Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute ornithologist Russell Greenberg, strengthen a budding theory that beak size may also be an adaptation to regulate temperature and conserve water. "Very few people ever stop to think that maybe these birds actually need water," Greenberg points out.

Years ago Greenberg noticed that sparrows who live in freshwater-stressed salt marshes tend to have larger bills than their relatives who live just a few kilometers inland. Then, in 2009, he read that thermal imaging revealed that toco toucans lose as much as 60 percent of their body heat through their bills. That got him thinking that maybe birds evolve larger or smaller beaks based on their need to either shed or conserve heat.

Matthew Symonds, an ecologist at Deakin University in Australia, was one of the first to investigate the relationship between beak size and latitude (a proxy for climate). "One of the arguments that was being thrown at us," Symonds says, was that toucans have exceptionally large beaks, so the "radiator" phenomenon probably would not apply to most birds.

In a paper published July 25 in PLoS ONE, Greenberg proved that argument wrong. Using thermal imaging, he compared two subspecies of the tiny song sparrow (Melospiza melodia). Although the Atlantic song sparrow and the eastern song sparrow have nearly the same body sizes, the former has a beak with 17 percent more surface area. Using thermal imaging, Greenberg?s team calculated that the Atlantic sparrow loses 33 percent more heat through its larger beak.

"The species has a fairly unassuming beak," says Symonds, who was not involved in the study. "You might think, 'Really, how significant could it be in terms of heat loss?' Thirty-three percent is really profound. Now it seems like it's going to apply to all sorts of birds."

Typically, birds pant to release excess heat, but this can also lead to water loss. Greenberg hypothesizes that some bird species can use their beaks as a radiator to shed excess heat without losing water?like a jackrabbit's ears. Beneath the skin, a beak has high vascularity and is uninsulated; if the bird's blood is hotter than the surrounding air, the heat will flow from the beak into the surrounding air. Greenberg calculates that by shedding extra heat through its larger beak, the Atlantic song sparrow saves about 8 percent more water than the larger-beaked eastern sparrow. Eight percent may not sound like a lot, but it could enable a bird to continue gathering food, defending its territory or seeking mates on hot days.

In a second study, published July 27 in Evolution (pdf), Greenberg and his colleagues studied beak size in song sparrows collected up and down the California coast. By measuring the beaks of 1,488 museum specimens and noting their origins, the team found that temperature explained over 40 percent of the variation in beak size; in areas with higher maximum temperatures, birds were more likely to have larger beaks?up to a certain point, that is. Past 37 degrees Celsius, beaks began to shrink. To Greenberg and Symonds, this roughly supports a second prediction of the hypothesis: The sparrows have a body temperature of around 41 degrees C, and heat flows to cold. So if the air temperature exceeds 41 degrees C, the larger beak could absorb heat and become a liability.
