John Tortorella is not the only hockey coach in his family as his younger brother Jim has spent nearly 20 seasons as a coach in the collegiate ranks.

Jim Tortorella coached at Colby College from 1995 to 2011 before taking an associate head coaching position at the University of New Hampshire.

As head coach of Colby College, Tortorella led his team to a record of 230-138-33. His primary role at UNH is to work with the defense.

From his bio page at UNH:

?In addition to his duties at Colby, Tortorella has long been a mentor to some of the best young players in the United States as he was named the assistant coach for both the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 USA World Junior Teams. Tortorella also serves as the director of player development for the USA Hockey affiliates of New England for six years. As a reflection of his versatility and esteem in the hockey community, Tortorella was elected president of the prestigious American Hockey Coaches Association in 2001, and in 2005 was selected as vice president of the AHCA?s Hockey?s Coaches Care Charitable foundation.

John and Jim played on the same high school baseball team with John at short stop and Jim and second base.

Ice Cream Sandwich update won't be coming to HTC's Incredible S, says Bell Mobility

Even though Jelly Bean's the latest mobile OS to come out of Mountain View, there are still OEMs and carriers working on delivering the not-so-fresh Ice Cream Sandwich update to some of their earlier handsets. Now, unlike what we'd previously heard, it appears HTC's Incredible S won't be on the receiving end of said 4.0.x refresh, with Bell Mobility taking to Twitter to reveal that the Taiwanese outfit "will not be updating the Incredible S with ICS." Still, things could potentially take a turn for the best, as the Canadian carrier told a cheerless S owner, "If that changes, I'll let you know." As for us, well, we'll have to hold off on making any changes to our current Ice Cream Sandwich list.

South Africa hosts 'peace talks' in mine standoff

South African officials Wednesday brokered closed-door talks between workers and management of Lonmin's platinum mine to end a strike where violence has killed 44 people.

Almost three weeks into the work stoppage, about 50 negotiators from unions, non-union workers, the mine and the labour ministry met in the Rustenburg town hall, near the Marikana mine in North West Province.

Fewer than eight percent of the 28,000 employees showed up for work on Wednesday, in a further slide in attendance as the strike hit its 20th day at the plant owned by the world's third largest platinum producer.

An immediate resumption of operations seemed unlikely, with Lonmin insisting that a "peace accord" be sealed before talks start on the wage demands that saw workers first down tools on August 10.

"Today is the day of peace accord and a first step and an instrument to move together. Everyone wants it to be a success," company spokeswoman Sue Vey told AFP.

"At the end of the day it's all about public order. We cannot discuss wages when people are intimidated. It's all a matter of 'it has to go back to normality before anything can be discussed'," she said.

But workers -- who say they earn 4,000 rand a month and want 12,500 rand (1,190 euros, $1,490) -- insist they won't go back below ground until their demands are met, and some have threatened colleagues who do return.

Lonmin says workers already earn around 10,000 rand when bonuses and other compensation are included.

Outside the hall, Lonmin employee Benzi Tau told AFP: "We trust that our leaders will convince the employer to come to a sensible decision. So far they haven't showed any sympathy to our need."

Police opened fire on striking workers at the mine on August 16, killing 34, after an escalating stand-off between rival unions that had already killed 10 people including two police officers.

The incident was the worst day of police violence in South Africa since the end of white-minority apartheid rule in 1994.

Mediator Bishop Jo Seoka from the South African Council of Churches nonetheless struck an upbeat tone Wednesday before entering the venue.

"I'm very optimistic because this is the first time that all the parties are meeting. We are positive," he said.

An official from South Africa's labour dispute resolution agency said the talks would last until Friday.

The labour ministry is facilitating the talks between the London-listed firm and unions including the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and smaller rival the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).

Representatives of the striking miners who say they do not belong to any union are also attending.

"We will not move from the (demand) for 12,500 rand," said Zolani Bodlani during a short break from the talks, before he hung up the phone.

High Commissioner Dineo Ntoane of neighbouring Lesotho -- a country completely surrounded by South Africa which lost four miners in the violence -- also came to the talks "to represent the interests of the Basothos".

South African authorities earlier said a miner from another neighbouring country, Swaziland, had also been killed.

Meanwhile the court case for over 250 miners arrested after the strikes continued in Pretoria, where the prosecution argued for a postponement pending further investigation. Ntoane said 25 of these were Basotho.

The men face charges ranging from public violence to murder, while 78 injured in the shooting are set to be arrested once they are discharged from medical treatment.

We?re taking the website to NBC Sports Network, with a one-hour show every weekday, at 5:00 p.m. ET.

The show, curiously dubbed Pro Football Talk, debuts on Tuesday, September 4.? Hosted by the highly competent and funny and engaging Erik Kuselias and by an Internet hack who is the exact opposite of those three traits, the show will bring the PFT temperament and attitude to the small screen, with help from NBC talent like Rodney Harrison, Hines Ward, Doug Flutie, Ross Tucker, Amani Toomer, and Peter King.

The powers-that-be tell me they?re sending out an official press release soon.? They wanted me to say something for it.? Here?s the best I could muster:? ?When we started the website, the goal was to create a place I?d want to visit as a football fan.? TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - Republicans formally nominated Mitt Romney as their presidential candidate on Tuesday to face Democratic President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

By voice vote in a raucous arena, delegates to the Republican National Convention united behind the former Massachusetts governor, who this year outlasted a series of conservative challengers to come out on top.

Romney, 65, is in a close fight with Obama with 70 days to go until the election and Republicans hope he will gain some much-needed momentum from the Tampa convention this week.

Nearly $4 Million Raised At Susan G. Komen Walk For Breast Cancer

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) ? Officials said more than a thousand people helped raise more than $3 million over the weekend in the fight against breast cancer.

More than 1,400 people participated in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for Breast Cancer that took place in the Twin Cities over the weekend. It started Friday morning and finished Sunday afternoon at the State Capitol in St. Paul.

Officials said $3.8 million was raised during the event. That money will go towards breast cancer research.

As the face of your company, you may find yourself having to give speeches from time to time. Maybe you?re giving a speech at an industry conference, or perhaps you?re just trying to rally the troops at the annual company party. No matter what the venue, there simple fact is that you want your speech to get your message across in a clear, memorable, and exciting way.

But let?s face it ? for most of us, giving a speech is absolutely terrifying. In fact, fear of public speaking is cited by many people as their absolute top fear, ranking even ahead of death. However, I believe that if you?re well prepared and have a kick-ass speech written, you?ll be less nervous and be more likely to succeed.

With that in mind, here are some simple tips to help you write a speech that truly kicks ass.

• Identify the goal of your speech ? What?s the reason for your speech? Do you have a particular message you need to share? Are you trying to get the audience to take a specific action? Are you hoping to sway opinion? Figure out the goal of your speech, and make sure that everything you write aligns with this.
• Know your audience ? The more you know about your audience, the better. By pinpointing who your audience is, you can better understand their interests and what type of messaging is most effective at reaching them. This will help you tweak your style and message to fit them best.
• Figure out what your overarching message is ? At the end of your speech, you want your audience to walk away with a clear, memorable message. Even if they forget all the nitty-gritty details of your speech, you want them to remember the main point you were trying to make. So, keep the big picture in mind, and drill that message into their heads.
• Keep it short ? Our attention spans are shorter than ever before. I?m a firm believer in getting your message across in as few words as possible. The Gettysburg Address might be the most famous speech of all time, and it was only a few minutes long. Say what you have to say, and be done with it.
• Speak to your audience?s emotions ? Your speech shouldn?t be about spewing a bunch of facts and figures, even if you?re trying to use them to support your point. Relying too much on logic will bore your audience to death. Instead, find a way to connect with them on an emotional level that connects with their hearts.
• Edit until you get it right ? You?re not going to write the perfect speech on your first try. It?s a process. You have to keep editing, reading the speech aloud, editing some more, and so on until you get it just right. So, don?t wait until the last minute to write your speech.
• End powerfully ? A weak ending can ruin an otherwise great speech. You need to strive to end your speech with a simple line that people will remember.

Abdullah defeated Suraj R. Prabodh from Karnataka 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, in the fina, while Thombre overcame top seed Simran Kaur (Delhi) 7-5, 6-3.
