T-Mobile Q4 2012 revenue drops 5.2 percent to $4.9 billion, customers and income also fall

TMobile revenue drops 10 percent to $41 billion, customers and income down, too

It might be a good thing that T-Mobile's in the crosshairs of a MetroPCS merger, as the company again shed revenue, customers and profits. Total revenue dropped to $4.9 billion from $5.2 billion last year, while profits were down a whopping 25.1 percent over Q4 2011 to $1.05 billion. Meanwhile the company dropped 515,000 branded contract customers compared to 492,000 last quarter, representing a 'churn' rate of 2.5 percent, a slight improvement over last year. All that culminated in a rather miserable year for the carrier, which despite showing income of $4.9 billion for the year, took a whopping $11.3 billion in depreciation and impairment charges, resulting in a full year loss of $6.4 billion. Meanwhile, Deutsche Telecom said recently that T-Mobile would soon fall under its umbrella along with MetroPCS as early as April -- which sounds like it can't come soon enough.

Hands-free Fruit Ninja: NUIA makes it easier to code PC apps with eye control (hands-on)

Hands-free Fruit Ninja: NUIA makes it easier to code PC apps with eye control (hands-on)

We know what you think this hands-on is about. That laptop you see up there has a Tobii eye-tracking sensor affixed to it, and you're probably wondering why we're still dwelling on it after getting hands-on twice at CES 2012 and once more at CES 2013. But that's not what we're here to show you today. While wandering the halls of Mobile World Congress, we came across NUIA (Natural User Inter Action), a German company whose software is designed to make it easier for developers to code apps that make use of eye tracking sensors, such as Tobii's. In particular, devs will only have to write one extension, even if they're making use of multiple sensing devices (e.g., eye control and gesture recognition).

That comes in handy for a game like Fruit Ninja, as the required gestures extend beyond the bounds of what Tobii can do by itself. (Tobii lets you do things like zoom in, select objects and scroll, but not swipe flying fruit.) If you venture past the break, you'll see yours truly trying (and occasionally succeeding) at Fruit Ninja, though obviously this game is just one use case (albeit, a very fun one). There's nothing stopping developers from applying this to creative, productivity or even enterprise apps, too. As for availability, well, it's pretty clear the hardware will have to come before the software -- a NUIA spokesperson told us she doesn't expect its kit will be commercially available until sensing devices like Tobii become integrated into Windows 8 PCs. And if Tobii is any indication, that might not happen until next year at the earliest.

Dubai officials block Bahrain-based AP journalist

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Two Bahrain-based journalists, including a reporter for The Associated Press, were blocked from entering the United Arab Emirates on Monday under apparent new restrictions by Gulf Arab states.

Reem Khalifa and her husband, Mansoor al-Jamri, chief editor for Bahrain's independent Al Wasat newspaper, said they were told by authorities at Dubai International Airport that they were on a list to deny entry.

No further explanations were immediately given, but it appears part of tighter coordination between Gulf allies to control and monitor journalists, activists and others in the region.

Like all Gulf partners, the UAE has expanded crackdowns on perceived political dissent since the Arab Spring, including charging 94 people last month with conspiring to overthrow the ruling system. But it still remains among the most open countries in the Gulf for journalists, researchers and scholars.

Bahrain's 2-year-old uprising is a critical issue for Gulf leaders, who want to safeguard the ruling families across the region.

Khalifa and her husband ? on a private visit to Dubai ? closely cover Bahrain's struggles between majority Shiites and the Sunni rulers in the strategic kingdom, which is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

Khalifa had visited Dubai last year without incident. Al-Jamri was among the winners in 2011 of the International Press Freedom Award by the Committee to Protect Journalists.

A senior UAE official said airport immigration issues fall under Dubai police, which had no immediate comment. Bahrainis and other citizens from the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council ? as well as many Western passport holders ? can enter the UAE without a pre-arranged visa.

Bahrain, however, has imposed a special journalist visa that has sharply limited outside media access to the country.

Last week, the UAE also denied entry to a prominent academic from the London School of Economics who was scheduled to speak about Bahrain at a conference on the Arab Spring.

The UAE's Foreign Ministry said Monday that Kristian Coates Ulrichsen was not allowed into the country because his work has been critical of Bahrain's monarchy, which is closely backed by other Gulf leaders. The UAE said "non-constructive" views on Bahrain are unwelcome.

Coast Guard ends search for mystery capsized boat

By Andrew Rafferty, Staff Writer, NBC News

Coast Guard officials are scratching their heads after ending a two-day search of the Northern California coast for a reportedly capsized boat that, so far, they are not sure ever existed. ??

The two-day search for the boat off the Monterey coast near San Francisco was suspended on Tuesday with no signs of debris or any indication that an incident occurred, according to a Coast Guard spokesman.

An air and sea search over a 20,000-mile area of the Pacific Ocean began Sunday evening when a man placed a distress call around 4:20 p.m. saying his 29-foot sailboat was taking on water and having problems with its electronics. Also on board were the man?s wife, 4-year-old son and a young cousin, according to the caller.

About one hour after the initial call, the family of four declared they were abandoning ship. ??

On Tuesday the Coast Guard released audio of the calls in hopes that a member of the public could identify the man?s voice. The gargled audio is difficult to make out, but officials believe the name of the boat is Charmblow.

"Coast Guard, Coast Guard, we are abandoning ship. This is the (Charmblow), we are abandoning ship," the ship?s operator said in the faint audio.

Problem is, there is no registered owner to a boat by that name, the family has yet to be identified and no one in the area has been reported missing. Officials are not ruling out that the incident may have been a hoax.

And as the Coast Guard called back the patrol boats, planes and helicopters participating in the 42-hour search, officials were turning to the public for help.

?If anyone knows someone who owns a vessel with a similar sounding name, please let us know that,? Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Mike Lutz told NBC BayArea.

Lutz said the family did not have life rafts, but were trying to use coolers and other materials on the boat to use as a makeshift raft.

?Right now we?re asking the public if they know anyone, a friend a relative a neighbor who went out and hasn?t come back that they please call the Coast Guard,? said Lutz.

Awkward Oscar fashion flubs: A wedgie, a fall

Mario Anzuoni / Reuters

Actress Jennifer Lawrence falls as she walks up the steps to accept the award for best actress for her role in "Silver Linings Playbook" at the 85th Academy Awards on Feb. 24.

By Danika Fears, TODAY

While the 85th Academy Awards went off without any big hitches, a few fashion-induced flubs threatened to overshadow some of the night?s biggest moments. ?

Evening gowns can be rather pesky, after all. Jennifer Lawrence, wearing a voluminous dress, took a spill on her way up to the podium to accept her award for Best Actress. But the 22-year-old dealt with it like a graceful pro.

?You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell,? Lawrence said as fellow Oscar-goers gave her a standing ovation.

She wasn?t the only leading lady to have an awkward fashion moment. Meryl Streep lit up the Twittersphere after adjusting her dazzling dress while presenting on stage.

?Am I dreaming? Did I just watch Meryl pick a wedgie?? one Twitter user asked.

Actress Anne Hathaway arrives at the Oscars on Feb. 24, 2013 in Hollywood, California.

And then we came to this year?s Best Supporting Actress, Anne Hathaway, who got the night off to a buzzy start because of the unfortunately placed darts in her pale pink dress. Within minutes the actress had inspired a "@HathawayNipple" Twitter account.

?We?d just like to point out that we won Best Supporting Actress without *any* support,? the account tweeted after Hathaway took home her award.

But despite the Twitter explosions surrounding these more awkward moments, the ladies still have their gold statues to hold onto. And those last forever.

Blizzard pounds Colorado, slows air traffic

(Reuters) - A powerful winter storm threatened the U.S. southern plains states on Monday, promising a mix of rain and snow that was likely to bring heavy snowfall to southeastern Kansas and central Missouri from Monday night to Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service said.

"Heavy snowfall rates in excess of an inch per hour will be possible in some locations," the service said. "Gusty northeast to north winds will result in considerable blowing and drifting of snowfall.

"Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous," it said.

The same storm had blanketed eastern Colorado with snow on Sunday, prompting the cancellation of 200 flights in and out of Denver International Airport.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper ordered all non-essential state workers to report to work two hours later than scheduled on Monday to give Denver snow plow drivers more time to clear city streets.

Fossils of Africa?s oldest ?lion? found in Libyan Sahara

Team members search for fossils at the Zallah oasis (Photo: Carnegie Museum of Natural History)

Tripoli, 23 February 2013:

A team from an American museum has discovered exciting new fossils at the Zallah oasis, including Africa?s oldest carnivore, a predecessor to the modern-day lion.

?We found a wonderful new location, unknown to scholars, that offers us a unique window on the past,? American palaeontologist Christopher Beard told USA Today.

Ignoring the current US government warning against all but essential travel to the country, Beard, from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, organised the expedition with geologist Mustafa Salem from the University of Tripoli. The group of American and Libyan scientists made their discoveries on an outcrop of fossils at the oasis.

The petrified remains the team found at Zallah, which was once located on the coast, date back more than 28 million years, making it one of the oldest fossil sites in Africa. Beard described it as ?a spectacular place to look at evolution,? where further evidence was found of what are termed ?aspirational apes,? simian predecessors to monkeys and human beings.

Beard said that in Libya there is ?tremendous interest? in further collaborative projects of this kind. He said that most Libyans, including scientists, wanted ?lives that are part of the wider world.?

For his earlier expedition in 2010 it apparently took Beard three years to arrange a visa. This time, he said, all it took was one letter of invitation and permission from the Libyan oil company Zueitina ?to explore near one of their facilities.? Zueitina was very supportive, providing internal flights, accommodation and armed trucks to escort the scientists to the oasis.

While the team from Pittsburgh gained access to this Saharan site, other archaeological teams are desperately waiting for security to stabilise so they can return to their fieldwork.

Teams from Britain and Italy are being prevented from resuming their excavations because, with the current security situation, universities cannot get insurance for their archeologists to work in Libya.

Get to the Point! 5 Best Practices for a Better Cover Letter ... - YouTern

200336713-001Not everyone believes you should include a cover letter with every resume.

Some say busy hiring managers just discard a cover letter and jump straight to the resume. Others insist a cover letter is an opportunity to show how the skills on your resume match the job requirements ? and build rapport with a prospective employer.

Despite the differing opinions, people in both camps agree on one point: If a prospective employer requests a cover letter, you should provide one.

Consider the following when drafting your next cover letter:

1. Make Your Letter Visually Appealing

Before anyone ever reads your cover letter, they are going scan the document. If your cover letter even?looks daunting, you?ve already lost the game.

Long sentences and unbroken blocks of text are turnoffs for readers ? especially hiring managers who spend their days slogging through cover letter after boring ?cover letter. Your sentences should be short. Paragraphs (there should only be three to five) should be separated by a space (no need to indent). Consider using bullet points when listing your qualifications and accomplishments to further break up the text and make your qualifications more scannable.

2. Write an Original

Drafting a generic form letter may seem like a time-saver, but a cover letter template?will end up hurting you in the end ? when you lose the interview because you failed to be sincere. Write a fresh cover letter for every job opportunity. Closely read the job posting and tailor the letter to match. Use terminology similar to that in the posting and adopt a similar tone (some job postings, for instance, are strictly business, while others are more conversational). Be original? and show will fit in.

3. Keep Your Writing Relevant

A cover letter should not be a mere catalog of your skills and experience ? that?s what your resume is. Nor should it be your life story ??a recruiter will simply pass. Use a cover letter to show you are the right person for the position?by matching your qualifications with the specific requirements listed in the job posting. Use real-life examples, quantify your achievements and be specific to the task at hand.

4. Include the Basics, Everytime

While each cover letter you write should be tailored to the specific job for which you are applying, there is some standard information?you should always include:

  • Your name
  • The position for which you are applying
  • How you heard about the position

Also, if you have a contact inside the company (who doesn?t mind vouching for you) mention their name (Joe Smith, a manager with John Doe Company, suggested I pursue this opportunity). And, at the end of your letter, ask for an interview and reiterate how the company can benefit by hiring you.

5. Make It Perfect

Once you write your first draft, set it aside for at least a few minutes. Then go back and reread. Look for opportunities to tighten your language, strengthen the points you make and delete unnecessary words. Then read it again, keeping an eye out for typos, misspellings and grammatical errors (which will kill even the most well written cover letters). Finally, since we are our own worst editors,?have someone very good at written communication proofread the letter. Often a fresh set of qualified eyes will catch what you missed.

Consider these cover letter best practices next time you submit an application. Who knows, that cover letter no one seems to agree on just may make the difference between getting an interview? and not.

(AP) ? A major snowstorm that shuttered airports in Missouri, stranded truckers in Illinois and buried parts of Kansas in knee-deep powder was promising a messy and possibly dangerous commute Friday morning as it crawled northeast.

Wind gusts of 30 mph were expected to churn-up snow that fell overnight in southern Wisconsin, where forecasters were warning Milwaukee-area residents of slick roads and reduced visibility. The same was expected in northeast Iowa, where residents could wake up to as much as 7 inches of new snow, while nearly 200 snowplows were deployed overnight in Chicago.

At a Travel Centers of America truck stop in the central Illinois city of Effingham, all of the 137 parking spaces were filled by truckers unwilling to drive through the storm overnight.

"When it gets really bad, they like to camp out," cashier Tia Schneider said Thursday night, noting that some drivers called ahead. "They can make reservations from 500 miles away to make sure a space is available."

The storm system swirled to the north and east late Thursday, its snow, sleet and freezing rain prompting winter storm across the region ? and leaving some impressive snow accumulations.

Northern Oklahoma got more than 13 inches of snow, while up to 10 inches fell in the Kansas City, Mo., area. In Kansas, 17 inches of snow fell in Hays and several other cities got nearly that amount. Farther east in Topeka, 3 inches of snow fell in only 30 minutes, leaving medical center worker Jennifer Carlock dreading her drive home from work.

"It came on fast," Carlock said as she shoveled around her car late Thursday. "We're going to test out traction control on the way home."

Numerous accidents and two deaths were being blamed on the icy, slushy roadways.

State legislatures shut down in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Nebraska and Iowa. Most schools were closed in Kansas and Missouri, and many in neighboring states.

That included the University of Missouri, where classes were canceled for one of the few times in its 174-year history. At a nearby WalMart, students made a beeline for the aisles containing sleds and alcohol.

"This isn't our usual Thursday noon routine," Lauren Ottenger, a senior economics major from Denver, said as she stockpiled supplies.

All flights at Kansas City International Airport were canceled for Thursday night, and officials said they'd prepare to reopen Friday morning. On the other side of the state in St. Louis, more than 320 flights at Lambert Airport were canceled.

Transportation officials in the affected states urged people to stay home.

"If you don't have to get out, just really, please, don't do it," Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback said. Interstate 70 through Kansas was snow-packed, and a 200-mile stretch between Salina and Colby was closed. The Kansas National Guard had 12 teams patrolling three state highways in Humvees to rescue motorists stranded by the storm.

For those who needed to drive, it's wasn't a fun commute.

Richard Monroe, a technology manager and marketing representative for the Missouri State University bookstore, said he arrived with eight of his colleagues in Kansas City, Mo., on Wednesday for a conference. He said a shuttle bus taking them on what should have been a five-minute trip got stuck in the snow, then ran into a truck. The vehicle was incapacitated for nearly two hours.

"We saw today that Kansas City is just shut down. I've never seen a big city like this where nothing is moving," the 27-year-old said.

Others people came down with cabin fever, including Jennifer McCoy of Wichita, Kan. She loaded her nine children ? ages 6 months to 16 years ? into a van for lunch at Applebee's.

"I was going crazy, they were so whiny," McCoy said.

Heavy, blowing snow caused scores of businesses in Iowa and Nebraska to close early, including two malls in Omaha, Neb. Mardi Miller, manager of Dillard's department store in Oakview Mall, said most employees were gone by 4 p.m., with "only two customers are in the entire store."

The storm brought some relief to a region that has been dealing with its worst drought in decades.

Vance Ehmke, a wheat farmer near Healy, Kan., said the nearly foot of snow was "what we have been praying for." Climatologists say 12 inches of snow is equivalent to about 1 inch of rain, depending on the density of the snow.

Near Edwardsville in Illinois, farmer Mike Campbell called the precipitation a blessing after a bone-dry growing season in 2012. He hopes it is a good omen for the spring, noting that last year, "the corn was just a disaster."

Areas in the Texas Panhandle also had up to 8 inches of snow, and in south central Nebraska, Grand Island reported 10 inches of snow. Arkansas saw a mix of precipitation ? a combination of hail, sleet and freezing rain in some place, 6 inches of snow in others.

A sea of peonies?in gorgeous wine country always makes me swoon, but when you top that off with a cute as can be couple? I am a goner. It?s all made even more stunning with the vintage pieces from? One True Love Vintage Rentals, and you can see just what I am talking about right here.

From the Bride? I?ve always dreamed of a romantic and elegant wedding in the wine country. Jim and I often visit Sonoma because it is the perfect getaway from the foggy city where we can be surrounded by gourmet food, wine and natural beauty. We also got engaged in Healdsburg so the wine country holds a special place in our hearts. Our family friend?s private estate in Sonoma was the perfect venue for our special day. The property is surrounded by lush vineyards, and the beautiful gardens have special meaning for us because many other family celebrations have taken place there. Everyone who was invited to the wedding was a person we knew well, and this contributed greatly to the extended family feel of our intimate occasion.

Jim and I had a lot of fun planning and designing our wedding together, and it was truly a collaborative effort. We both work in the design world and are passionate about food, so needless to say the decor and the menu were very important to us. It was so much fun putting our creative and project management skills together, to create our special day. We both share a DIY spirit and wanted to personally design elements of our wedding so that our day would reflect our personalities. Our wedding theme was rustic elegance.

We were engaged for 11 months, and as soon as I had the ring on my finger I could not wait to start planning every little detail! One bridesmaid who is a graphic designer created beautiful wedding invitations that set the tone for our theme and incorporated the oak tree and rustic shed that were on the private estate. We ordered rubber stamps with our custom art features and I lovingly hand stamped the art on every place card, favor hang tag and welcome gift bag. Jim built rustic wood directional signs that were placed all around the property. We asked Jim?s mom, who is a wonderful and most creative baker, to make our adorable wedding favors: homemade mini blueberry pies with heart cut-outs baked inside canning jars. She loved the idea, and the pies were a huge hit. A candy bar displayed our favorite old fashioned treats in apothecary jars along with a French macaroon tree made in our wedding colors. ?A & J? moss-covered letter cut-outs appeared here and there around the property, and large ?A & J? pale pink floral letters hung on the old oak tree that we were married under. I even asked my mother, who is a writer, to create a special poem that she would read during our ceremony. It was amazing, personal and touching. Even the groomsmen had tears in their eyes, not to mention our wedding guests. Love is in the details!

Our summery color palette featured blush pink, moss green and cream which complimented our vineyard setting. Our florist created elegant arrangements of blush peonies (my favorite!), pale pink and cream garden roses, green hydrangeas and viburnum in antique silver vases. The tables were dressed with rustic linen tablecloths, white china, vintage silver place settings, mercury glass votives and bottles of wine from the vineyard on the property. In keeping with our elegant theme, a canopy draped with soft white fabric and adorned with an elegant crystal chandelier was placed over the bridal table and curtains and mini chandeliers with tea lights hung from nearby pergolas. Vintage French country furniture was brought in to create intimate lounge areas on the lawn for guests to relax in.

One of my favorite details of the day was the vintage white Packard convertible getaway car with which I surprised Jim at the end of evening. I will never forget the look on his face when the car drove up to whisk us away after our sparkler send off. Even the weather did its best, with balmy breezes into the evening, when everyone from the three-year-old nephews to the grandparents danced and celebrated. We feel such gratitude to have warm and wonderful memories of a wedding that really was perfect, reflecting our love for each other and everyone who joined us on this most wonderful day in our lives.

Camera-Equipped Elephants Filmed Wild Baby Tigers For the First Time Ever

It turns out there's an uneasy jungle truce between tigers and elephants. Tigers don't try to attack and eat full-grown pachyderms, and the elephants make sure not to trample the big cats. And it's this unofficial agreement that the BBC used to its advantage to capture the first footage of newborn tiger cubs in the wild. More »

Honda goes solar with $65 million investment

The first automaker to offer a hybrid-electric vehicle in the U.S. market, Honda is diving even deeper into renewable energy with a project it says could make solar power affordable for its dealers and customers.

The goal of Honda?s new partnership with SolarCity is to make energy from the sun less costly than utility-supplied power, according to the carmaker ? which has set up a $65 million investment fund to back the project.

"We believe Honda and Acura customers are going to be very interested in going solar once they find out that they can install solar at their home with little or no upfront cost, can lower their monthly utility bill, and can make a positive contribution to protecting the environment,? said Steven Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office of American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

The Detroit Bureau: Audi set to reveal new plug-in version of little A3

Founded by brothers Lyndon and Peter Rive in 2006, and headquartered in San Mateo, California, SolarCity provides a wide range of sun-powered technologies, including commercial and residential solar energy arrays, as well as solar charging stations for electric vehicles which Honda says it also is ?envisioning? for its future EV and plug-in hybrid customers.

The project will target customers and dealers in the 14-state service area where SolarCity now operates ? which include a number of markets where battery cars are gaining the most traction, such as California, Texas and the Mid-Atlantic region.

The Detroit Bureau: NYTimes Admits Mistakes - But Says Tesla Also at Fault

The partnership will offer Honda and Acura customers and dealers several financing options with little to no up-front costs, including one option that the maker claims ?will be lower than the cost of their utility bill, with insurance, repairs and monitoring service included.?

The project will also offer owners of Honda vehicles the opportunity to make energy-efficiency upgrades, including weatherization and improved heating and cooling systems.

"By making it easier and more affordable for its customers to use clean power, Honda is reinforcing the fact that solar is the new normal," said SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive.

The Detroit Bureau: Prepping the Next Ford Mustang

A number of automakers have been exploring the potential of solar power. Several, such as Fisker and Toyota, offer vehicle rooftop panels that can be used to supplement battery power or operate a vehicle ventilation system on hot days.

General Motors, Audi and Volkswagen, meanwhile, have added large solar arrays at a number of their plants. GM?s Detroit-Hamtramck plant, for example, uses sun power to help charge up the batteries of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrids produced at the facility. And VW recently switched on a solar park at its factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The 33-acre system generates enough energy to power 1,200 homes ? or about 12.5% of the assembly plant?s energy needs.

Google Search by Image browser extension for Chrome now works on non-public images!

Google has just updated their Search by Image browser extension for Chrome.

The update comes with a very useful new functionality. You can now use it on non-public images.

Until now, the app used the public URL of the image to search through their database. Google is now caching the image temporary on their servers to search for it.

I played with this new feature by running the extension on an image attachment in Gmail. Worked fine!

Dark Chocolate Promotes Heart Health, Reduces Heart Disease Risk

chocolateheart2 265x165 Dark Chocolate Promotes Heart Health, Reduces Heart Disease RiskIs chocolate good for you? You bet! While not all chocolate is created equal, there are absolutely benefits to gain if eating the right kind of chocolate. Just one of many benefits of chocolate revolves around boosted heart health and lowered heart disease risk. This is great news for all of us who would like to enjoy some chocolate without the guilt.

There are multiple reasons for chocolate?s ability to promote a healthy heart, with flavanols being just one of them. Chocolate is loaded with flavanols ? these compounds are both anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. The darker the chocolate, the greater the concentration of these healthful compounds.

Compared to milk chocolate or white chocolate, dark chocolate is made from much higher concentrations of the cocoa bean. If you look on a well-stocked shelf, you?ll see these dark chocolate bars listing their percentage of cocoa. The higher the percentage of cocoa, the higher the flavanol level. Milk chocolate may have as little as 10% cocoa while dark-chocolate varieties have 50, 60, 80, 90, or even 100% cocoa.

One study found that compared to those eating white chocolate, individuals who ate dark chocolate reduced their ?bad? cholesterol by 20% while increasing their ?good? cholesterol by the same percentage. What?s the difference? The concentration of cocoa (also known as cacao) vs. the inclusion of sugar and milk.

In another recent study of Swedish women, those who ate one or two servings of dark chocolate each week cut their risk of heart failure by up to one-third. This study lasted 9 years and included 31,000 participants.

Finally, in?an?Italian study?originally published in the?Journal of Nutrition,?researchers found that 6.7 grams of chocolate a day can reduce inflammation that leads to heart disease.

Dark chocolate can even reduce blood pressure, albeit slightly. Researchers at Harvard Medical School found that chocolate eaters experienced an average 2-point drop in systolic pressure. Even blood flow improved.

Remember that quality is everything here.Your chocolate should be slightly bitter. A chemical process that is used to de-bitter chocolate and make it more palatable can actually destroy some of the benefits. If you?re a baker, avoid using baking soda with your cocoa ? t is alkaline and can actually destroy flavanols.

As one of the top antioxidant rich foods, chocolate can be good for you! When searching for chocolate, be sure to choose one with less ingredients, less added sugar, and as much cocoa as you like, can handle, or want to accustom yourself to.

Infants in poverty show different physiological vulnerabilities to the care-giving environment

Feb. 19, 2013 ? Some infants raised in poverty exhibit physical traits that make them more vulnerable to poor caregiving, according to new research published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science. The combination of physiological vulnerability and poor caregiving may lead these children to show increased problem behaviors later in childhood.

For infants growing up in poverty, the ability to adapt and regulate -- both biologically and behaviorally -- in response to various environmental pressures seems to be critical for successful development.

To explore why some at-risk children wither while others bloom, researcher Elisabeth Conradt and colleagues examined data from a longitudinal study that followed women at risk for parenting problems and their infants. Conradt, who is now a postdoctoral researcher at the Brown Center for the Study of Children at Risk, conducted the study as a graduate student at the University of Oregon.

To assess infants' vulnerability, the researchers looked at their respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) -- a physiological marker of the degree to which infants are attuned to their environment -- when the infants were five months old. They also looked at infants' attachment style and level of problem behaviors at 17 months.

The results revealed interactions between physiological vulnerability and environmental context in relationship to infants' developmental outcomes.

Infants who had high baseline RSA at five months and who were raised in an environment that promoted disorganization displayed more problem behaviors than did infants who had a high baseline RSA and were raised in an environment that fostered security.

These results support the idea that poverty is not a uniform stressor. High-RSA infants raised in disorganized caregiving environments faced the double whammy of an insensitive caregiver and poverty. For these infants, high baseline RSA may have increased their sensitivity to negative parenting experiences, leading them to develop coping strategies that became problematic later in childhood. Indeed, in this study, these infants fared the worst, showing problem-behavior scores that were far above clinical risk indices.

But poverty did not have the same effect for high-RSA infants who had nurturing caregivers. Physiological susceptibility -- in the form of high baseline RSA -- may have enabled these infants to be more attuned to, and affected by, a sensitive caregiver. The data suggest that these infants had the lowest levels of problem behavior, falling below community norms reported in other studies.

Infants with low baseline RSA showed higher than average problem behaviors, regardless of caregiving environment. The researchers speculate that, for these infants, poverty may be a more powerful predictor of problem behavior than the immediate parenting context.

Conradt and colleagues argue that this research may have important implications for efforts to identify the children who are most vulnerable to developing problem behavior given their biological and environmental risk factors early in life.

Along with Conradt, co-authors include Jeffrey Measelle and Jennifer Ablow of the University of Oregon.
