MEDINAH, Illinois (Reuters) - Phil Mickelson looked on like a proud father as he watched Keegan Bradley enjoy a spectacular Ryder Cup debut teaming up with his young protege to contribute two wins to the United States 5-3 lead over Europe on Friday.
Mickelson, the most experienced member of the U.S. Ryder Cup brigade with nine appearances, provided the knowhow and Bradley the youthful energy.
They combined to brush aside Briton Luke Donald and Spaniard Sergio Garcia 4&3 in the morning foursomes then followed up with a 2&1 victory over the Northern Ireland duo of world number one Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.
"His (Bradley) energy is so positive, it's so good," Mickelson gushed. "His driver and his putter is off the charts.
"We've had a lot of fun, and that brings out best golf out."
When Bradley joined the PGA Tour in 2011, he and Mickelson struck up an instant friendship that has blossomed into a full-fledged bromance.
The two golfers displayed an obvious chemistry, enjoying every minute they spent inside the Ryder Cup pressure cooker, playfully slapping each other on the back, trading fist-pumps and high-fives and charming the pro-American galleries who roared their support.
"I just loved every second of it," said Bradley, who won the PGA Championship in his rookie season. "To be able to walk down the fairway with Phil and do this is just a dream come true.
"It's another moment in my life that I can't believe I'm a part of. It could be the best day of my life. It's just a blast.
"This is literally what I've dreamt about since I was a little kid and I got to do it next to my idol all day."
Bradley dropped the decisive putt to cap the morning match and did much of the heavy lifting in the afternoon, carding six birdies.
But it was Mickelson who delivered the decisive blow with a pinpoint tee shot at the 17th that ended the match with a handshake as McIlroy and McDowell conceded defeat.
"It's awesome and right here on the 17th, it was incredible," said Mickelson. "We've had so much fun and it's what brought our best golf out and to close out with that shot feels spectacular.
"This is one of the most emotional days playing a Ryder Cup that we'll ever have.
"I felt young, and it felt great. To finish it like this was just great."
BEIJING (AP) ? A business survey shows China's manufacturing declined again in September, though the slowdown might be bottoming out.
HSBC Corp.'s latest purchasing managers' index, based on a survey of more than 400 companies, was 47.9 for September, slightly up from 47.6 in August. The index measures manufacturing activities on a 100-point scale on which numbers below 50 show a contraction.
The HSBC report shows China's manufacturing contracted for the 11th straight month in September, as new export orders fell at the sharpest rate in 42 months amid weak international demand.
HSBC's China economist Hongbin Qu said in an accompanying statement that "the sharper contraction of new export orders and the lingering pressures on job markets mean that Beijing should step up easing to support growth and employment."
Girls who don?t gauge their own weight status properly run a greater risk of developing an eating disorder. These young women are not just dissatisfied with their appearance, they misjudge it entirely.
Knowing that it is a distorted self-perception rather than personal dissatisfaction which marks the normal or underweight girl as in danger of an eating disorder is helpful in terms of screening for the illness. Especially in today?s obesity-minded culture, doctors are usually open with young girls and parents about the risks of over-weight, but attention also needs to be given to teens of lower weight who reveal a body-image problem.
Feeling unhappy about the way you look or the shape of your body is not the same thing as having a poor body image. Since somewhere between 50 and 80 percent of American women express dissatisfaction with their body, a more precise indicator is needed. New research on the subject, gathered from a longitudinal survey of over 5,000 teenage girls with no obvious weight problem (their body mass index, or BMI, was lower than 85 percent), could lead the way to more precise screening.
Using a sample of this large subject pool, researchers compared girls? true weight status with their perceived weight status. Girls who gauged themselves as overweight, but who actually were not, were tagged as having a distorted body image.
The study team then employed analysis techniques to forecast how a distorted body image would impact the girls? behaviors, particularly in terms of diet, exercise and drastic weight loss measures like using laxatives or purging. By tracking the subjects to the one year mark, the researchers discovered that girls with a wrong body image who begin using drastic and unhealthy weight loss techniques are more than 10 times as likely to still be using those behaviors a year later.
The study found no link between a distorted body image and excessive exercise as a weight loss tactic. While a tiny percentage of girls do develop an addiction to exercise for weight loss, in the majority of cases exercise promotes a healthy approach to improved mood and self-perception.
The study highlights the importance of catching distorted body image thinking in young girls before they begin to choose unhealthy eating and extreme dieting. Once that thinking and behavior takes hold, it becomes quite difficult to break. To proactively guard against this risk, girls need reinforcement in understanding that bodies are vessels for the person inside, help in focusing on their personal strengths and a supportive atmosphere that focuses on health rather than numbers on a scale.
Some families may need to get rid of the bathroom scale entirely. Parents can help their young and teenaged daughters by cultivating positive life habits such as balanced eating, regular exercise, and correct talk about physical appearance. Good habits may be hard to form, but bad habits are hard to break.
The Essilor Vision Foundation and The Special Olympics Foundation recently had the honor of participating in the 2012 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in New York City. On the opening day of the annual meeting, President Bill Clinton announced a $12 million grant from businessman and philanthropist Tom Golisano to the Special Olympics, which will allow for the launch of a new Healthy Communities initiative.
A longtime partner to the Special Olympics, the Essilor Vision Foundation has been the exclusive global supplier of corrective lenses for the Special Olympics-Lions Club International Opening Eyes vision care program. As part of the Healthy Athletes program launched in 1997, Opening Eyes promotes healthy vision for Special Olympic athletes and includes vision screenings, corrective and sports protective eyewear for athletes in need and referrals for athletes requiring follow-up treatment and services.
?As a proud partner to the Special Olympics Foundation, we are ecstatic to watch the opportunities this generous donation will unfold for the foundation?s future,? said Stephen Shawler, president of the Essilor Vision Foundation. ?The Special Olympics Foundation, like that of the Essilor Vision Foundation, aims to improve health for everyone ? not just those who can afford expensive care and treatment. We couldn?t be any prouder to call the Special Olympics Foundation a partner.?
The goal of the Special Olympics Healthy Communities initiative is to achieve improved health outcomes for people with intellectual disabilities, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that all are receiving health services, reaching their full potential. It will expand services to more athletes, increase partnerships with local organizations, expand the use of technology and promote awareness of the health difficulties facing people with intellectual disabilities.

Imagine a way to get your teenage kids interested in researching and critical thinking about the Constitution and the Founding Fathers.? Now imagine your younger kids receiving a cash award for writing an essay about what they would tell the Founding Fathers if they could travel back in time, or your older teenager recording a winning essay about the relevancy of the Constitution.? To top it all off, imagine your child receiving that award and praise from a group of combat veterans.? Now stop imagining, and read about the VFW patriotic essay programs.
For over 60 years, the Veterans of Foreign Wars has sponsored the Voice of Democracy for high school age kids and the Patriot?s Pen for junior high age.? Each program offers cash prizes from local posts across the country, with progressively larger prizes as winners rise from the post level to district and state level competitions.? Each state submits their top entries to the national level, where the top prize is a $30,000 college scholarship to the school of your choice.
?
The Patriot?s Pen contest is for kids in 6-8th grades.? They submit a written essay of 300-400 words on this year?s topic, ?What I Would Tell America?s Founding Fathers? to your local VFW post (list of MN VFW posts here).? Parents can?t write the essay for their kids, but they can help supervise to keep them on track.? Imagine the conversations you could have with your kids about the Founding Fathers.
The Voice of Democracy is for 9-12 graders, and moves beyond a written essay to a 3-5 minute recording of the author reading their own work.? The topic for VOD this year is especially germane to the times, ?Is Our Constitution Still Relevant??? Not only do kids learn about the Constitution and how it applies to our country today, but they get practice in speaking their thoughts out loud.? Winners will get practice in public speaking as well, as they are usually asked to speak at patriotic events such as Veteran?s and Memorial Day ceremonies.
There is no official number, but it was estimated that last year VFW posts across Minnesota gave over $40,000 in prizes.? The top Patriot?s Pen essay from Minnesota, written by 6th grader Chloe Schroeder from Owatonna, received a $4,000 savings bond for her work.? Entries are due to local posts by November 1st.
For conservatives, the VFW?s patriotic essay programs are a Win-Win-Win.? Win 1) Get today?s generation of teenagers (tomorrow?s leaders) to think critically about the Constitution and the Founding Fathers.? Win 2) Show kids what a simple meritocracy system is; no affirmative action or nepotism here, only the top essays win top prizes.? Win 3) Introduce your kids to the veterans who believe in liberty and freedom so strongly that they volunteered to defend them.
If you have questions about the program or need help finding your local VFW post, you can find the Department of MN VFW on the web or on Facebook.
If you still can't find a contact at your local post, leave a comment at Foreign and Domestic and I will be happy to help.
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A federal judge on Thursday determined that a California man behind a crudely produced anti-Islamic video that inflamed parts of the Middle East is a flight risk and ordered him detained.
Citing a lengthy pattern of deception, U.S. Central District Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal said Nakoula Basseley Nakoula should be held after officials said he violated his probation from a 2010 check fraud conviction.
"The court has a lack of trust in this defendant at this time," Segal said.
Nakoula, 55, was arrested Thursday. He had eight probation violations, including lying to his probation officers and using aliases, and he might face new charges that carry a maximum two-year prison term, authorities said. Nakoula will remain behind bars until another hearing where a judge will rule if he broke the terms of his probation.
Nakoula wore beige pants and a collared shirt when he was led into the courtroom handcuffed and shackled. He appeared relaxed, smiling at one point before the hearing and conferring with his attorney.
After his 2010 conviction, Nakoula was sentenced to 21 months in prison and was barred from using computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer.
In July, a 14-minute trailer for the film "Innocence of Muslims" was posted on YouTube, leading to protests around the Middle East. Nakoula, a Christian originally from Egypt, went into hiding after he was identified as the man behind the trailer, which depicts Muhammad as a womanizer, religious fraud and child molester.
In court Thursday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale said Nakoula was flight risk, partially because of the uproar over the film. The violence in the Middle East broke out Sept. 11 and has spread since, killing dozens, including Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens.
"He has every incentive to disappear," Dugdale said.
The hearing had an unusual wrinkle as the news media were banned from the courtroom, and reporters had to watch the proceedings on a TV in a different courthouse a couple blocks away. Court officials didn't give a reason for the decision.
Nakoula's attorney Steven Seiden sought to have the hearing closed and his client released on $10,000 bail. He argued Nakoula has checked in with his probation officer frequently and made no attempts to leave Southern California.
Seiden was concerned that Nakoula would be in danger in federal prison because of Muslim inmates, but prosecutors said he likely would be placed in protective custody.
The full story about Nakoula and the video still isn't known.
The movie was made last year by a man who called himself Sam Bacile. After the violence erupted, a man who identified himself as Bacile spoke to media outlets, including The Associated Press, took credit for the film and said it was meant to portray the truth about Muhammad and Islam, which he called a cancer.
The next day, the AP determined there was no Bacile and linked the identity to Nakoula, a former gas station owner with a drug conviction and a history of using aliases. Federal authorities later confirmed there was no Bacile and that Nakoula was behind the movie.
Before going into hiding, Nakoula acknowledged to the AP that he was involved with the film, but said he only worked on logistics and management.
When the judge asked him during Thursday's hearing what his true name was, Nakoula said his name was Mark Basseley Youseff. He said he'd been using that name since 2002.
Lawrence Rosenthal, a constitutional and criminal law professor at Chapman University School of Law in Orange, said it was "highly unusual" for a judge to order immediate detention on a probation violation for a nonviolent crime, but if there were questions about Nakoula's identity it was more likely.
"When the prosecution doesn't really know who they're dealing with, it's much easier to talk about flight," Rosenthal said. "I've prosecuted individuals who'd never given a real address. You don't know who you're dealing with, and you're just going to have very limited confidence about their ability to show up in court."
A film permit listed Media for Christ, a Los Angeles-area charity run by other Egyptian Christians, as the production company for "Innocence of Muslims." Most of the film was made at the charity's headquarters. Steve Klein, an insurance agent in Hemet and outspoken Muslim critic, has said he was a consultant and promoter for the film.
The trailer still can be found on YouTube. The Obama administration asked Google, YouTube's parent, to take down the video. But the company has refused, saying the trailer didn't violate its content standards.
Nakoula has put his home up for sale, disconnected his phones and gone into hiding since violence erupted over the film.
Enraged Muslims have demanded punishment for Nakoula, and a Pakistani cabinet minister has offered a $100,000 bounty to anyone who kills him.
First Amendment advocates have defended Nakoula's right to make the film while condemning its content. And federal officials likely will face criticism from those who say Nakoula's free speech rights were trampled by his arrest on a probation violation.
Meanwhile, a number of actors and workers on the film have come forward to say they were tricked. They say they were hired for a film titled "Desert Warrior" and there was no mention of Islam or Muhammad in the script. Those references were dubbed in after filming was completed.
Actress Cindy Lee Garcia has sued to get the trailer taken down, saying she was duped.

NCI funding continues work focused on chronic lymphocytic leukemia
An international consortium of scientists studying chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), based at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, has been awarded a 5-year, $20 million grant by the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health. The grant is the second renewal of funding for a broad-based effort designed to better understand the pathology of CLL the most common form of leukemia in the Western world and develop new drugs and treatments.
"This funding allows us to continue critical research that has already produced substantial, new insights into how and why CLL develops and progresses differently in patients," said Thomas J. Kipps, MD, PhD, professor of medicine in the UCSD School of Medicine, deputy director of research at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center and director of the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Research Consortium (CRC). "Our work has revealed new targets and approaches for both mitigating the disease and perhaps eventually preventing it."
The CRC consists of eight diverse institutions: UC San Diego, The Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, the Mayo Clinic, Ohio State University, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard Medical School, the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System and the BARTS and London Cancer Centre in England. Under the auspices of veteran CLL scientists, researchers and doctors in the CRC have created distinct projects addressing different aspects of the disease. Among them:
The genetic basis for CLL and how genes change as the disease progresses
The resistance of CLL cells to apoptosis or programmed cell death, a trait that makes them less susceptible to chemotherapy
The potential of immunotherapy using the body's natural immune system to reject cancer to halt and reverse CLL
Repairing defective immune cells to maximize immunological response to mutations
Development of new anticancer agents that either inhibit development of CLL or render the surrounding microenvironment inhospitable to cancer cells
CLL is a particularly confounding challenge. It is a blood cancer characterized by the accumulation of abnormal, dysfunctional lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) in the blood and bone marrow. As these lymphocytes swell in number, they interfere with normal body functions, including disabling of the immune system.
Prevalence of CLL in the United States is high: 1 in 20 people over the age of 40 may have apparently pre-cancerous CLL-like cells in their blood. These people may develop actual CLL at a rate of about 1 percent per year. More than 15,000 new cases of CLL are diagnosed each year in the United States. Roughly 4,400 patients with CLL die annually.
The condition is most often diagnosed in elderly patients, usually from a standard blood test. The course of the disease can vary dramatically with each individual. In some patients, CLL develops very slowly with no obvious symptoms for many years. In others, it is much more rapid, requiring quicker medical intervention.
Currently, there is no cure and existing treatments frequently involve adverse, even life-threatening, side effects, prompting doctors to often delay aggressive treatment until absolutely necessary.
Though a blood cancer, Kipps said CLL research may have implications for understanding and treating of solid tumor cancers, such as breast and ovary. For example, researchers have found that tumor suppressor genes in CLL appear to play a similar role in solid tumor cancers. Also, CLL does not require access to often hard-to-reach tumors. It can be studied with a simple blood draw, over time in the same patient. The lessons learned may have broader application.
"For more than a decade, the CRC has brought together scientists and institutions to focus completely on CLL, people and places that might otherwise not be able to collaborate," Kipps said. "In that time, we've made real advances, both at the bench and at the bedside. We've got a long way to go. CLL is a tough disease. But this grant means we'll be able to continue pushing forward."
The NCI grant runs through August 2017, and totals $19,527,174.

In Wilson?s latest installment, LD is struggling with being raised in a poverty stricken urban community, by a single mother who is uneducated, government aid dependent, and addicted to drugs; all while he is attempting to figure out his sexual orientation and his unwavering attraction to members of the same sex.
Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) September 27, 2012
Told through the eyes of a young homosexual male, The Slurpee Chronicles proves that through tolerance and truth, anything is possible.
Using hard-hitting literature to tackle some of life?s biggest controversies, writer K.D. Wilson is delighted to announce the launch of his latest book, ?The Slurpee Chronicles: Giving You the Tea?.
Official Series Synopsis:
The Slurpee Chronicles: Giving You The Tea is a timeless story of acceptance and love within the LGBT community. Told through the eyes of La?Darious (LD), a young homosexual male, author K.D. Wilson lowers the veil on such controversial issues as homophobia, sexually transmitted diseases, and the underground world of down low men. It?s a roller coaster ride through one man?s experience of learning to understand himself and the life he was given.
This is a story that transcends sexual preference, race, and gender to remind us all that through tolerance and truth, anything is possible.
In Wilson?s latest installment, LD is struggling with being raised in a poverty stricken urban community, by a single mother who is uneducated, government aid dependent, and addicted to drugs; all while he is attempting to figure out his sexual orientation and his unwavering attraction to members of the same sex.
Throughout The Slurpee Chronicles: Giving You The Tea, LD goes through a range of emotions and extremely vivid/descriptive sexual encounters, hoping to eventually find someone that can give him the one thing his parents haven't been able to, love.
As the author explains, the book serves an important dual purpose.
?The Slurpee Chronicles is entertaining as well as informative. It sheds light on the underground world of down low men in the urban communities throughout the globe. It highlights the excitement, as well as the dangers that homosexual men encounter while being involved with members of the same sex, who are not public about their sexual desires,? says Wilson, a United States Navy veteran.
He continues, ?It also highlights the health concerns that many women throughout these communities face from being intimate with men who are on the down low unbeknownst to them.?
Since its release, the book has received a consistent string of five-star reviews.
?I began reading this book and literally put everything aside until it was complete,? says Melissa M, reviewing the book for Amazon.
Another reader, K.T. Jordan, was equally as impressed.
?This book was a definite hit, I loved it! Just as I'd attempt to put it down, there came that good old "tea" again. Great price for some great reading!?.
With so much success on his hands, fans of Wilson?s work await the next installment of ?The Chronicles? with baited breath.
Until then, The Slurpee Chronicles: Giving You the Tea, published by CreateSpace, is available for purchase from Amazon.com.

As is the case on the first Vu, LG is including a stylus dubbed "Rubberdium Pen 2.0" that offers a finer point for more precise input -- and from our translation of the Korean press release, it seems as though the pen can be stored inside the device like the Samsung Galaxy Note. LG is also touting the ability of the Optimus Vu: II to use VoLTE (Voice Over LTE). Although here in the states we're probably going to be waiting for a while for VoLTE, LG is getting it ready for their local market. VoLTE provides higher voice quality potential, and supports simultaneous voice and data.

As the tipping point becomes a boiling point in the lockout of the officials, it?s important to remember that all of the blame doesn?t fall on the shoulders of the replacement officials.
The final play was reviewed, and the ruling on the field was upheld.
Under normal circumstances, the decision would be made exclusively by the referee.? Now, with the non-replacement league supervisor in the replay booth along with the non-replacement replay official, the procedure has been, we?re told, blurred a bit, allowing the replacement referee to get input from the folks who otherwise would be saying, essentially, ?Figure it out, Hochuli.?
If the non-replacement replay official and the non-replacement league supervisor didn?t tell the replacement referee to overturn the call, the non-replacements deserve a lot of the blame.
Make no mistake about it.? This one could have been overturned.? Rule 15, Section 9 makes the question of whether a pass was ?ruled complete/incomplete/intercepted? subject to replay review, with no exception for questions of simultaneous possession.
Yeah, we know the ESPN call says simultaneous possession can?t be reviewed by replay.? We disagree.? If it wasn?t reviewable by replay, it wouldn?t have been reviewed by replay.? It was, so it is.? (The only aspect that isn?t reviewable is the question of whether Seahawks receiver Golden Tate pushed off before jumping, because pass interference is a judgment call.)
Still, while the replacement officials don?t deserve all of the blame, the current circumstance ? with non-replacements in the replay booth having a hand in debacles like last night?s final play and Sunday?s replay gaffes in Minnesota and Tennessee ? the system that the NFL has created via its effort to break the officials? union has given rise to these errors, and so ultimately the league bears the blame for what we are witnessing.
That said, the locked-out officials should be blamed, too.? After all, the members of the NFL Referees Association who moonlight as supervisors of officiating at major college conferences made clear that anyone who accepts a short-term assignment as a replacement official with the NFL will lose his regular college gig.? And so the NFLRA has contributed to the low quality of the officiating that we are now experiencing by pressuring the second-best officials into not working for the NFL, as they did during the 2001 lockout.
Regardless of the blame, the time has come to get it done.? If they don?t, the next step could be boycotts and assaults on NFL sponsors.

Living Wills
The problem with some living wills is that they only provide guidance in a few circumstances. The trouble emerges from the increased quality of life-prolonging medical technology. The increase in technology has made it difficult for doctors now to predict the conditions that a person will be in should they live through their ordeal. In addition, there are problems with interpreting what a living will means. For example, a problem could arise in the use of the term "meaningful quality of life." It be difficult for a person's loved ones to determine what their loved one meant by "meaningful quality of life" without any help from that person. This also stems from the drafter's inability to articulate what they want should they become unable to make medical decisions for themselves.
Now, some argue that people should abandon the use of living wills in lieu of appointing a health care agent to speak on that person's behalf. As always, it is important for a person to discuss his or her wishes with the agent making the decisions for that person. The good thing about this option is that anything can be used by the agent as evidence of that person's wishes. In other words, a person could make a phone call to the agent and discuss what they want or they could write a list or letter.?
