Murray State University experiencing housing shortage

MURRAY, Ky. - Murray State University is experiencing a record number of students requesting to live on campus, as a result they're coming up a little short on beds.

Interim President Tim Miller told Local 6 he feels bad there are some students who won't get a room immediately when they get to campus, but added that they are doing everything they can to find room.

"We've got a list of probably 45 students that are on a waiting list,?but we expect to have them housed probably two weeks after school starts," Miller said.

University leaders say more upperclassmen?are wanting to stay on campus and more students?are staying in school, in general, however, a big part of the housing problem is one entire residential college is closed.?

Hester Hall was scheduled for renovations and will be closed all year.??

"We do have some old dorms that may have to be renovated occasionally, so were getting them up to snuff," Miller said.

In the meantime, upperclassmen who are usually held to on-campus living through reduced tuition are being exempted, and even enticed to leave campus with a $300 in meal money. Some students are volunteering to take in a third roommate and residential advisers who normally get a room to themselves will also have roommates.

"Just be patient if you've applied and don't have a room assignment yet," said Miller.?"We're going to take care of you."

Classes start August 20.
