Youth sports: softball, baseball, soccer

SOFTBALL

Bantams

The Chatham Golden Eagles are going to the Ontario Provincial Women's Softball Association's Tier II championship after placing third at a weekend qualifying tournament in Palmerston.

They had a 4-2 record to earn a spot at the provincials Aug. 9-11 in Cobourg.

The Eagles clinched bronze medals Sunday with a 6-2 win over Whitby at the double-knockout tournament. Hannah Roesch struck out three in a complete-game four-hitter, Sydnee Baker hit three singles, Carys Owen doubled and singled, Maddy Alexander hit a double, and Kaley Veldboom, Shayna Carey and Katreena Whiteye singled.

The Eagles then exited with a 4-1 loss to Brampton, the eventual gold medallists. Roesch allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings before Aliyah Whiteye pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

They started Friday with a 14-0 mercy-rule win over Cambridge. Aliyah Whiteye tossed a one-hitter and fanned six in five innings, while seven Eagles hit singles.

Aliyah Whiteye also pitched the final 4 2/3 innings in a 7-6 win over North Oxford, giving up two runs and striking out six. Roesch allowed four runs in 2 1/3 innings and hit a double.

Roesch went the distance and fanned three in a 5-2 loss to Desboro.

Aliyah Whiteye fanned four in a 5-3, complete-game win over Palmerston. Veldboom hit two singles and Roesch, Carey, Madison Goodwin, Katreena Whiteye and Aliyah Whiteye also singled as Chatham clinched a berth at the provincials with a top-four finish.

Midgets

The Chatham Golden Eagles went 1-2 at the Ontario Provincial Women's Softball Association qualifying tournament in Niagara Falls on the weekend.

They'll play Aug. 2-4 in Stratford at the PWSA Tier II championship.

The Golden Eagles led 3-1 in their opener before losing 6-3 to Haldimand. Morgan St. Pierre struck out two and allowed three earned runs in seven innings, Kaitlyn Davie and Katrina Heyink doubled and singled, and Jordan Ashely and Alyssa Chacon singled twice.

Winning pitcher Alyssa Chacon went the distance as Chatham beat Cambridge 9-2 in six innings. Davie doubled and singled, Ashely and Michelle Truong each singled twice, and Lyndsay Welch had a single and an RBI.

Heyink doubled twice in a 17-2 elimination loss to Palmerston.

BASEBALL

Rookies

The Chatham Diamonds won three of four weekend games at Jaycee Park.

Hunter Myers and Tyler Ewald each doubled and singled Sunday in a 9-8 win over Riverside 'AAA'. Kurt Countryman had an RBI double.

Sebastian Moreno and Owen Reeve each singled twice in an 18-4 loss to Riverside. Jacob Williams had an RBI double.

On Saturday, the Diamonds swept the Wyoming Wranglers 13-0 and 10-1.

Tevin Kelly doubled and singled in Game 1. Reeve, Myers and Trent Stephenson singled twice.

Ethan McDonald had two singles and two RBIs in Game 2. Ayden Blain doubled and singled.

Minor Mosquitos

The Chatham Diamonds were swept by Leamington in a twinbill Sunday at Kinsmen Park.

Austin Koslof hit three singles in a 15-13 loss. Darion Bacik doubled and singled.

Deni Goure had a double and an RBI in an 11-6 loss. Bacik and Ethan Vsetula each doubled and singled.

On Thursday, Bacik drove in two runs with a triple and two singles in a 12-11 loss at Kingsville. Koslof, Goure, Owen Lemieux, Ross Henderson and Reid Goodburn each singled twice.

On Wednesday, Bacik and Henderson combined on the shutout in a 14-0 win over Dresden. Goure also had two doubles and two RBIs, and Goodburn hit a double and two singles.

Major Mosquitos

The Chatham Diamonds beat Wyoming 10-0 in Game 2 of a doubleheader Saturday at Kinsmen Park after losing 18-2 in Game 1.

Cameron Vandermeesch tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing three hits and striking out four in five innings for a mercy-rule win.

Matt Stephenson had two singles, two RBIs and two runs. Dakota Vangoethem had two hits and one RBI, Jackson Moon hit a two-run triple, and Brock Whitson and Morgan Lucier each had two RBIs.

Whitson and Nate Rogers had RBIs in the Game 1 loss. Vangoethem and Ryan Kelly each had a hit and a run.

Minor Peewees

The Chatham Diamonds went 1-2 in pool play at the Cambridge tournament on the weekend.

The Diamonds scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning and held on to beat Vaughan 11-9 in the opener.

Winning pitcher Grayson Ladd also had two hits and two RBIs. Craig Spence added three RBIs and three runs, and Sam Haight had two RBIs.

Spence had two hits and two runs in a 7-6 loss to Mississauga. Ladd and Malcolm Campbell each had two RBIs.

Ladd tripled and singled in a 14-2 loss to Burlington. Campbell and Haight also hit singles.

Major Peewees

The Chatham Diamonds won 4-2 and lost 13-1 in a doubleheader Sunday with the Windsor 'AAA' Stars at Kinsmen Park.

Winning pitcher Connor Goldsmith struck out 10 in Game 1, allowing three hits and one earned run in six innings before Bryce Joseph tossed a perfect seventh.

Goldsmith also hit a two-run homer and a single.

Jacob Breault had a single and an RBI in Game 2. Spencer Marcus doubled and scored.

Major Bantams

Zack Kelly, Dakota Butt, Riley Vandenborn and Noah Wiseman each had one hit for the Chatham Diamonds in a 3-3 tie at Essex on Wednesday.

Midgets

Dylan Webster pitched seven strong innings Saturday and gave up three earned runs in the Chatham Diamonds' 5-1 loss to Amherstburg at Fergie Jenkins Field at Rotary Park.

Webster, Chris McMahon, Mike Ball and Josh Horney hit singles.

SOCCER

Girls Under-14s

The Chatham Strikers lost 5-0 to the Oakridge Hurricanes on Friday in London in the Western Ontario Youth Soccer League.

Girls Under-9s

Julia Trinca scored twice and Avery Haines had the shutout for the Chatham Strikers in a 2-0 win over the Sarnia Under-9s in the Lambton-Kent District Youth Soccer League recently.
