JACKSON, Tenn.- After almost two full days of no classes, students at Union University headed back to classes, Wednesday. The north Jackson campus was shut down Monday due to widespread and violent illness that had sickened hundreds of students and staff.

When classes were cancelled, school administrators estimated more than 300 students were too ill to attend class.

Since Monday, Union's custodial staff had cleaned and disinfected as much of the campus as possible

The university did not have a figure of haw many students were still out as of Wednesday, but while WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News was there, the campus looked less busy than usual.

"If you have had the stomach bug, you know it is not a pleasant thing to experience. And so our students are happy to be getting back into class to be getting back into the routine to be doing what they came here to Union to do," said Tim Ellsworth, a spokesman with Union University.

Health department officials have not identified the virus that caused the campus to shut down.
