HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - A northwestern Indiana man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for his role in a real estate fraud scheme prosecutors say involved seven other people.
Randall B. Causey of Gary was convicted last year by a federal jury on one count of conspiracy and six counts of wire fraud in the scheme.
Causey's attorney told U.S. District Judge Rudy Lozano at Wednesday's sentencing that his client likely earned between $30,000 and $50,000 in the scheme. But attorney R. Brian Woodward says money was not a motivating factor for Causey, whom he described as "an unselfish person."
The Times of Munster reports prosecutors say Causey and seven other defendants who have entered pleas gave lenders false information and recruited buyers who were sold homes at inflated prices.
